WATERCOLOR PAINTING
(SEction B)
INSTRUCTOR: Ekaterina vanovskaya
Two-Day Workshop: October 4 & 5, 2019
FEE: $295 ($270 for members of EMFA and partner organizations)
MATERIALS: Paper, paint, and special equipment will be provided; see below for items participants are asked to bring
Learn to capture the luminosity and beauty of the natural world through watercolor painting!
After reviewing the basics of watercolor painting, we will go out into the landscape (weather permitting) and do quick black and white gesture studies, focusing on the fundamentals of composition and learning how shape and color create the pictorial language of a painting.
We will address such questions as: What do we need to look for to make a painting? What makes a painting work? How does the outdoors influence the way we think about painting? How do we take that information and use it to make the artwork we need to make?
Then, using the outdoors as research, we will take the sketches we made and the ideas we gathered and incorporate them in a finished painting.
Please bring:
• Paints:
-Lemon Yellow (or Hansa Yellow)
-Cadmium Yellow
-Yellow Ochre (or Raw Sienna)
-Burnt Sienna
-Cadmium Red
-Alizarin Crimson Permanent (or Quinacridone or Carmine or Rose)
-Ultramarine Blue
-Viridian Green
-Raw Umber
-Black
Ekaterina prefers cakes (because they are more efficient and best for painting outdoors as they come in sets with a palette) but it depends on personal preference and either will work. Any professional brand (vs cheaper paints) across the board will do - in the end you will be saving money because the pigment load is higher and therefore you will need less paint to mix colors and make an impact. Recommended brands include: Winsor and Newton (Professional Grade), M Graham, Van Gogh, Schminke, Sennelier, and Daniel Smith. (Ekaterina is still a fan of the cake pans, there are a lot of nice little sets by these companies that you can refill later once you run out.)
• Watercolor paper (9"x12" or 8.5"x11") - please bring enough paper so that you do not run out during the workshop, the more the better!
• IF YOU ARE USING LOOSE PAPER SHEETS (e.g. your paper does not come in a pad or block): please bring a hard surface to attach watercolor paper to.
• Blue painters tape or white masking tape
• A sketchbook
• A pencil
• Two brushes - Soft round, with pointed tips - #6 and #12 (or around those sizes)
• Container for water
• Water bottle to bring with you into the landscape
• Paper towels
• A palette with room to squeeze out each color and good mixing areas to mix color.
***PLEASE NOTE: If you have supplies already, and a selection of colors that works for you, bring what you have!***
